Chana - Lamb to the Slaughter

1) 1. Mary Maloney is the main character. She commits murder unintentionally and creates an alibi for herself, while appearing distressed by her husband's death. She is six months pregnant with her husband's child.
2. Patrick Maloney is her husband and a police officer. Mary kills him with the leg of a lamb after he tells her he is leaving her.
2) The main event is the murder of Patrick Maloney. Patrick tells his wife in the opening scene that he is leaving her, but will provide for her. She then goes to get him supper. She does not want him to leave as she cares for him. He rudely tells her that he does not want anything and she swings the leg of frozen lamb on his head and the blow kills him. She was not planning to kill him.
"...They would have lamb for supper...'Don't make supper for me. I'm going out' At that point Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without a pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down ... his head." The remainder of the story is that she calms herself down and figures out an alibi for herself. Her main concern running through her mind is her unborn child. If not for it, she would not care about the consequences of her actions. She goes to the store, buys some food, telling Sam the grocer that it is for her tired husband. She returns home, sees her husband lying there, cries, and then calls the cops. They come over quickly and do their detective work. She asks them to eat the cooked lamb as a favor to her. They eat it and talk among themselves. One of the men suggests that the weapon is nearby and Mary giggles.
3) How does Mary truly feel about her husband's death?
"All the old love and longing for him welled up inside her, and she ran over to him, knelt down beside him, and began to cry her heart out. It was easy. No acting was necessary."
Later that evening, the police officers say while eating the cooked lamb at her request, regarding the weapon, "probably right under our noses. What you think, Jack? And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to giggle."

Mhmmmm, the thrilling story of the wife who killed her husband with a lamb chop! I find this story very interesting and I enjoyed how you summarized this. Kudos on the good work.

I think that she regretted her actions and was really sorry for killing her husband. After she killed him, however she realized the repercussions of her actions. She was taken over by her practical half. She took action in order to secure the future of her child. In the end when she giggles, I think that she is infused with her victory. she is sort of drunk on it.

I think that she committed the murder without any real thought. Later, after realizing what she's done, she did feel sorry and regretted her actions, but what she couldn't go back and reclaim her actions. Now that she became somewhat rational, she had to do what she thought was best for her and her child. I don't sympathize with her nor do I feel bad for the husband. He probably didn't deserve to die but that wasn't my choice. She might have enjoyed how well she covered a crime a little to much but hey, everybody gets a rush when they get away with things. Pride kind of kick in over her sorrow, maybe a little too soon but how do we really know how soon is too soon?

She thinks that her husbands death is not a big deal and that he was deserving of his death. She killed him because of something she mnay have suspected and that he is deserving of the death because of what he did and she has no guilt of doing it but rather is amazed by her genius plan.

i think she was proud of the fact that she had killed her husband and 1 way that i had come to this conclusion is that if show was not proud of killing her husband than she surely wouldn't have gone ahead and cooked the lamb that she had killed her husband with and fed it to the cops i think that by doing this she went ahead and confirmed that she was comfortable with the decision that she had made to kill her husband.

I dont think that Mary really regretted what she had done. If it werent for her unborn baby, she would not have cared what happened to her. I think to an extent she really wanted to kill her husband, especially after he told her that he no longer wanted to be with her and was leaving her. When women are pregnant, they become extremely emotionaly and telling them that you are just walking out on them and the baby is just a slap in the face. Although he gave the security of providing for her and the baby, money doesnt always solve everything. Maybe Mary felt like she had to get him back or make him realize that he was making a mistake. I dont belive that she intentionally wanted to kill him, but i dont think she regretted it either. Her laugh at the end, i believe, was sly. It was her reaction to the fact that she had just gotten rid of the evidence of the "murder weapon" without the police even thinking twice about what it was. It was like she had committed a crime and so easily got away with it. Now she can have her baby without being punished for the crime she had committed. She may have even thought she was punishing herself, to a certain extent as she may have felt that raising the baby alone would be enough punishment for the crime.

Mary acted in which can be called the heat of the moment. She did love him, but at the same time I feel was extremely angry with him. After killing him, she quickly acted to get away with it and may have been a little giddy about getting away with it. Many people sometimes feel relieved/happy with getting away with certain things, but this takes it to a completely different level.

I think Mary felt sort of sorry for what she did, but she didn't let it overcome her rationality. She knew she had to act fast because not only was her life in danger, but also her child's life. What she did was crazy, but that shows that men have to be careful when women are mad and pregnant.
